In July of 2013, the price of a gallon of E85 in the Rocky Mountain region was $3.49 vs. the average retail price of gasoline at the time of $3.62. Because the energy content of E85 is lower and it doesn’t travel as far on one gallon, it was actually slightly more expensive to operate than gasoline (Source ). These prices fluctuate frequently, and E85 prices sometimes fall significantly below gasoline.
